The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

On a recent trip to Londinium, we called into the Tate Modern, on the south bank as you do, for a bit of culture. Having browsed around, we decided to try and find a keepsake form the souvenir shop, as there can be some good items in museums. So we descended into the labyrinth of items for sale and one stood out for us. A brick vase.

Now, you may or may not know the story of the famous Tate "Pile of Bricks". In 1972, Equivalent VIII by Carl Andre was bought by the Tate. The sculpture, 120 firebricks, arranged in a rectangular formation, an important Minimalist work, provoked uproar.

So we thought, great souvenir. Unfortunately, we didn't have the 72 readies they demanded! So if you feel generous . . .

I came across this recently. The redesigned logo for the Ryder Cup. I just thought it was a good piece of work. Below is the before and after. As you can see, it was desperately needed!

Back in the days when crochet was very popular with daughters, in 1983, a famous TV ad came out for yellow pages, the JR Hartley ad. (Click on Pic below)

Roll on too today, and Yell.com, (click on video below) has decided to use the theme of the J R Hartley ad, and reuse the idea. In the new ad, a retired DJ, Dav V Lately, is searching for an old record he once made. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is bad idea, as it does not reflect today's world of communication. Are we to believe our hapless hero is one of only a handful of people on the planet that has never heard of the interweb and relies on his daughter to enlighten him? Sound real to you? I must say, that the the staff in the record stores, do come across as real people! But most importantly, many people may not know the original ad, and therefore, its double meaning is lost!

Another bad idea, is the change in campaign direction for getting a TV Licence. In the current radio campaign, people forget something they shouldn't. Boyfriend forgetting girlfriend's name. Man forgetting his car is diesel. Even the TV ad, where a man is cooking a meal for his girlfriend, and she states that "something smells nice" even though he is cooking Fish, which she hates! Not a patch on the "We've herd all the excuses" campaign.

Last but not least, Ugly. No sooner had the election been called, when the first of the political posters appeared. Party activists racing around and climbing up every conceivable lamp post, directional sign and tree stump to place their No1 candidate right in your face. Carbuncles on the landscape. Not to mention a lack of creativity.
