Promotion of the hashtag on screen
Posted by Warren Davidson on February 10, 2010 in Online, Social Media, Web technologies with 0 CommentsWhether you are a web and social media aficionado or still trying to work out your html from your Hootsuite, the BBC's Virtual Revolution is a must-see. It is also one of the first programmes by the BBC to promote the hashtag on screen and a unique open-source documentary about the world wide web.
Search for #bbcrevolution or Virtual Revolution on Twitter for the most recent updates. Anyone doubting Twitter's arrival in the mainstream can't argue against the might of the hashtag.

In keeping with the programme's themes, this documentary was created in collaboration and debate with the web audience who helped shape some of the themes and discussion the programme debates. It seems unbelievable that we once all got along without the web and even more unbelievable that it is only 20 years old. The first episode was fascinating, including interviews with Tim Berners Lee (he invented the web by the way, no really) Stephen Fry (of recent Twitter fame) and some of the usual technology godfathers.
One of the most fascinating segments for me, from episode one, was a mathematically accurate model of web traffic in Britain. This was shown as a huge interconnected graphic with the biggest websites (by traffic) having the biggest spheres. Despite all the freedom, the web affords us in terms of communication and getting your self heard from a traffic perspective, there is still only one search engine (Google - 38 million searches a month), one bookshop (Amazon has 16 million visits per month), one social network (1 in 3 people in the UK have a Facebook page) and one market place (Ebay has 21 million visits a month) that matter. Where is the competition in this new world?
Sky+ it, and if you can't view the Iplayer, try the 3D Documentary Explorer and embrace the change the web has given to all of us.
