What is the role of social media within a company?
That entirely depends on the type of a company you are. According to the Great Places to Work Institute, social media plays an important role in the Top 100 Best Workplaces. In these organisations social media is deployed to enhance and strengthen workplace relationships amongst employees and between leaders and employees.
How it works depends on the type of company you are. In companies where there are low levels of trust, blogs and social spaces are meticulously policed in doing so amplifying those issues of trust.
In a high trust environment, social media tools are being used for all sorts of great things from peer-to-peer recognition programs, to micro-news updates from management, new hire welcomes and cross-team collaboration, helping to drive innovation and growth.
For these companies, the question is not if they should be using social media, but how they should use it, with in-house or private social networks the solution of choice for employers who wish to enable open conversation.
But are employees not wasting precious time?
Well that depends on the type of talent you hire. If you are hiring great talent, then you trust them to make the right decisions. Just as you wouldn't monitor their bio-breaks nor the time they spend in the lunch room, neither should you monitor the time they spend on social media? You trust that they are making the correct decisions throughout the day, and that they are managing their time in a way that produces the best results. If employees are accountable for their performance, when and how they get their work done is seen as less important than the results they deliver.
So, follow in the footsteps of the Great Companies to Work For and allow employees decide how they spend their time, by making them accountable for the overall result.
